In LIBS, a plasma is generated on the sample by means of a short pulsed laser. The light emitted during the breakdown of this plasma is recorded by a spectrometer, allowing element-specific analyses of the sample to be reliably performed. Detection limits of up to 10 ppm can be achieved.
In contrast to other atomic emission spectroscopy methods, LIBS offers the advantage of real-time measurement with the same analytical accuracy.
