X-550 Analyzer
The new standard in the XRF world
The new standard in XRF.
Key Features & Benefits
- 3x faster than its predecessor
- Delivers PMI for most alloys in 1 second with excellent precision.
- Ideally suited for high-temperature alloys and precious metals.
- Optimized for key PMI applications such as residuals and sulfidic corrosion.
Fast, precise testing
The SciAps X-550 sets a new performance standard for portable XRF devices. Weighing 1.3 kg with battery, it is the lightest, fastest, and most agile X-ray gun ever manufactured. It offers the small size, tremendous speed, and high precision of the X-Series in a perfectly balanced device. It is fast on all alloys, including aluminum.
The X-550 uses the industry’s most powerful X-ray tube, operating at up to three times the power compared to the SciAps X-505 and other portable XRF analyzers in Beam 2 setting. The unique geometry and tube power optimize performance for low atomic number measurement applications, including sulfidic corrosion (low Si), phosphorus and sulfur, and aluminum alloys, as well as for residual analysis per API 751 and 5L specifications.
NDT-PMI | Non-destructive X-ray testing
Delivers PMI for most alloys in 1 second with excellent precision
Delivers PMI for most alloys in 1 second with excellent precision. Some NDT-PMI applications require longer tests or multiple beam tests. Our Android app-based platform offers pre-configured, dedicated apps that make quality checks as easy for any operator as using a smartphone – including apps for residuals (API 751), sulfidic corrosion (API 939), API 5L, and other tests.
Optimized for key PMI applications such as residuals and sulfidic corrosion
For many PMI applications, rapid tests are sufficient to verify alloy grade and geochemistry. More complicated applications require longer test times or multi-beam procedures (one beam is optimized for transition and heavy metals, the other for low atomic number elements such as Mg, Si, Al, P, and S). Dedicated applications ensure that testing follows correct procedures, such as recommended test times and X-ray beam settings. The “Residuals” app, for example, defaults to a 15-second test time because Ni, Cr, and Cu must each be measured to <0.03% (total <0.15%) and Nb and V to <0.02%. The “Sulfidic Corrosion” app is pre-configured to require two-beam tests to measure Si down to 0.03% in steels.
Designed for NDT and PMI users to reach hard-to-access test locations and welds
Perfectly balanced, lightweight, and agile, you can test all day long without fatigue. The narrow footprint allows unrestricted access to virtually any test location and weld.
Scrap processing
Ideally suited for high-temperature alloys and precious metals
Like most XRF devices, the X-550 also delivers fast and precise chemical results on a variety of high-temperature alloys, stainless metals, red metals, and precious metals. The difference is the robustness of this metal-framed analyzer, which is still incredibly lightweight (< 1.3 kg) and perfectly balanced. You can use it for sorting all day long without fatigue. The built-in mobile phone camera (macro camera) enables photo documentation of the tested materials, and the Bluetooth label printer provides instant labels with time/date stamp, grade, and chemical composition.
With the aluminum application: Sort all your Al alloys in 1-2 seconds
If you process scrap, the only reason to purchase the X-550 over the X-505 is the tremendous speed and accuracy with aluminum alloys. The X-550 features our patent-pending aluminum app. It sorts your aluminum alloys in 1 to 2 seconds, including alloys that differ only in magnesium content (Mg). Grades that either could not be sorted with other XRF devices or required minutes of test time, such as 3003/3004/3005, cast 356 and 357, and 2014/2024, are just a few examples. You can now sort many similar aluminum grades cost-effectively.
Contaminants Phosphorus & Sulfur
The X-550’s powerful X-ray tube enables rapid analysis of phosphorus (P) in copper, as well as P and sulfur (S) in steels and stainless steel, allowing you to economically upgrade your copper and iron material based on low P and S values. The X-550 is three times faster at P and S than the X-505 or competing XRF devices. The faster test times make upgrading material to low P and S values more economical.
Tramp Elements
Scrap processing has evolved beyond mere sorting. Many consumers now require analyses of accompanying elements or residues in common steel, nickel, and copper alloys. The X-550 is optimized for low detection limits for common accompanying elements, including Cr, Ni, Cu, V, Nb, Mo in steels, Pb and Bi in nickel alloys, and various undesirable elements in copper alloys.
Mining
Now also available for exploration and ore grade control applications. The advantage of the X-550 for geochemistry is the fastest possible analysis of low atomic number elements in ore/soil samples, including Mg, P, S, Al, Si, Ca, and K. Contact us for more information about our exploration applications for elemental analysis and pathfinder elements. SciAps XRF analyzers are used worldwide by many large exploration companies and mining laboratory service providers. Also available with compact test stand for closed-beam operation.
Environmental and soil analysis
The X-550 can be equipped with apps for the elemental analysis of environmental soils. The analysis package includes the 8 RCRA metals and 11 of the 12 priority pollutant metals identified by the EPA (with the exception of beryllium, for which our LIBS can be used).
RoHS Applications
The X-550 is available with our RoHS and Halogen-Free app, providing fast, accurate analysis of the RoHS elements Pb, Cd, Br, total Cr and Hg, as well as Cl for halogen-free requirements. The high-performance tube in the X-550 enables faster Cl analysis than in the X-505.
General Analytics
Do you have a unique analytical application? The X-550 can be equipped with our Empirical App, which allows the user to set up unique beam conditions, define specific elements of interest, and create custom calibrations. For analytical requirements beyond the scope of alloys, ores, and polymers, the X-550 plus Empirical App offers complete flexibility for unique or proprietary analytical requirements.
A brief comparison: X-550 vs. X-505
What is the difference between the premium model X-550 and the workhorse X-505? The answer is simple: speed with low atomic number elements such as Mg, Al, Si, P, and S.
The X-550 operates at approximately three times the X-ray power in the “Beam 2” setting (also known as the low voltage setting) compared to the X-505 or other handheld XRF devices. This means that the measured intensities of Mg, Al, Si, P, and S (as well as K, Ca, and Cl in other applications) are three times higher, resulting in three times faster measurements.
