What are 3D scanning sprays used for?

3D scanning sprays are used for matting and anti-glare treatment of highly reflective, mirrored, transparent, and very dark surfaces. This allows them to be better scanned in optical metrology (e.g. 3D laser scanning) and complex geometries can be measured more precisely and quickly. The sprays prove to be indispensable, especially when 3D scanning components. The REFLECON® 3D scanning spray is sprayed onto the surfaces beforehand for this purpose.

What types of matting sprays are available?

There are basically two types of 3D scanning sprays:

  • Self-evaporating, i.e. sublimating scanning sprays (our REFLECON® TARNISH – TYPE 1)
  • Non-self-evaporating, non-sublimating scanning sprays (our REFLECON® TARNISH – TYPE 2)

Sublimating 3D scanning sprays
are particularly suitable for large objects, paint layers and plastics. Since the applied spray evaporates after a while, it does not have to be removed over a large area. This is also advantageous for objects that are difficult to clean, including small or sensitive objects.

Non-sublimating 3D scanning sprays are well suited for uncoated objects, metals, non-metals and thermoplastic plastics. When applied, a fine white powder layer forms, which must be removed later. Removal is easy with a cloth, a brush or simply with water. The non-sublimating spray is particularly recommended for time-consuming scanning processes, as it does not evaporate automatically.

TopoTrack

The TopoTrack spray revolutionizes 3D scanning! It is also one of the sublimating scanning sprays and therefore does not need to be removed, as it evaporates like all other sublimating sprays in the REFLECON series.

The special feature of TopoTrack: The innovative spray creates a reference structure system on the surface that helps the scanner to orient itself precisely – and all this without the hassle of sticking and removing the reference points.
The TopoTrack spray is not only user-friendly, but also gentle on the scanner fan, as no dust residue is produced during spraying.

The advantages of the 3D scanning spray from REFLECON®

  • Enabling the scanning of complex, mirrored, transparent and black surfaces
  • Formation of a homogeneous white matting layer for a precise measurement result
  • Independent evaporation or easy removal of the matting powder layer depending on the scanning spray type
